Q. What is Proposition 65 ("Prop65")?

Our products may display the following warning:

"WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm."

In August 2016, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (“OEHHA”) adopted amended regulations to the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, originally approved in 1986, and generally referred to as “Proposition 65”. The amended text is for the provision of a “clear and reasonable” warning. The warning does not mean that our products will necessarily cause cancer or reproductive harm. Moreover, a Proposition 65 warning does not mean that a product is in violation of any product-safety standards or requirements. In fact, the California government has clarified that “the fact that a product bears a Proposition 65 warning does not mean by itself that the product is unsafe.” The CA government has also further-clarified, “you could think of Proposition 65 more as a ‘right to know’ law than a pure product safety law.” See: http://oehha.ca.gov/prop65/background/p65plain.html.

Q. Why does SMEG include this warning?

In consideration of the high penalties for not complying, SMEG, like many other manufacturers, has elected to provide the Proposition 65 notice out of an abundance-of-caution, in order to avoid the potential for liability.

Q. I purchased this product outside of California, why is the warning included?

SMEG products are sold all over the US. Selling products specifically manufactured and packaged for the California market would be extremely-difficult to manage, and exceedingly-costly. For this reason, as well as to be in compliance with the Proposition 65 requirements, we have decided to apply these warnings on all SMEG products sold in North America.

Q. Where can I get additional information about Proposition 65?

For general information on the Proposition 65 list of chemicals, you may contact OEHHA’s Proposition 65 program at (916) 445-6900, or visit http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65.html. For enforcement information, contact the California Attorney General’s Office at (510) 873-6321, or visit http://oag.ca.gov/prop65.

Q. Since induction cooktops don't light up, how can I tell if the surface is still hot after I've taken the pan off?

Induction cooktops will show a flashing "H" (for "Hot") on the display, which means that the cooking zone is still above 140°F. When the temperature drops below this level, the display will automatically switch off.

Q. Are induction cooktops programmable?

You can set your induction cooktop to cook for a period ranging from 1 to 99 minutes via the programmable timer. When the time runs out, the cooking zone switches off automatically.

Q. What's the difference between ceramic cooktops and induction cooktops?

The SMEG ECO-logic function, a feature of both ceramic and induction cooktops, involves an electronic device which limits the appliance's power consumption to less than 3 kW, for houses whose power limits do not allow higher wattage.
This means that you can safely use various electrical appliances at the same time.

Q. What's the best way to clean my ceramic or induction cooktop?

Cooktops must be regularly-cleaned, ideally, after every use. Make sure that the residual heat indicators are no longer lit up before cleaning. If burned-on food residue has been left on the cooktop after cooking, scrape it off using the supplied scraper,
then rinse, and finally dry with a clean cloth. Regular use of the scraper will reduce the need to use chemical products when cleaning your cooktop. For more information on how to keep your cooktop in tip-top condition, please consult the user manual supplied with your SMEG product.

Q. What's the best way to clean my SMEG stainless steel dishwasher?

Never clean the appliance using abrasive cloths or aggressive detergents such as bleach, ammonia or alcohol, as this could leave permanent marks on the surface. Use only soft, clean cloths, and non-abrasive cleaning fluids, specifically meant for the surface that you are cleaning, like stainless steel cleaning fluid.

Q. What's the best way to clean my SMEG retro-style dishwasher?

Never clean the appliance using abrasive cloths or aggressive detergents such as bleach, ammonia or alcohol, as this could leave permanent marks on the surface. Use only soft, clean cloths, and non-abrasive cleaning fluids, specifically meant for the surface that you are cleaning, like glass cleaning fluid.

Q. Aside from the upper cutlery basket, do relevant models also have a smaller cutlery holder?

As well as the addition of a third basket specifically for cutlery, some models also include a removable cutlery holder in the bottom basket.

Q. What's the maximum plate diameter that the bottom basket of SMEG dishwashers can take?

This depends on the height of the dishwasher:

*In the "MAXI" models, whose height is 86cm / 33 7/8", the bottom basket can take large plates with a maximum diameter of 14" when the top basket is pushed all the way up to the top
*In the European-size models, whose height is 82cm / 32", the bottom basket can take plates with a maximum diameter of 12"

Q. How often do the active charcoal filters have to be changed?

The filters should be changed every 3 months to ensure optimum extraction performance, although this may vary depending on what kind of cooking you normally do, and how often. If you have a SMEG hood with electronic controls, an indicator light will tell you when it's time to change the filters. Clean filters are essential for optimum performance.

Q. What's the best way to clean my SMEG stainless steel hood?

Never clean the appliance using abrasive cloths or aggressive detergents such as bleach, ammonia or alcohol, as this could leave permanent marks on the surface. Use only soft, clean cloths, and non-abrasive cleaning fluids, specifically meant for the surface that you are cleaning, like stainless steel cleaning fluid.

Q. How does the Pyrolytic Function work?

A feature of certain SMEG ovens, Pyrolytic cleaning is an automatic cleaning function which works by heating the inside of the oven to over 900°F, a temperature at which any grease stuck to the walls is simply burned off.
All Pyrolytic ovens use Cool Door Technology, which means that during the Pyrolytic Cleaning Cycle, the outer door glass will become no hotter than 130ºF,
and feature a special safety device which locks the door for the duration of the process. Once the program has finished, and the oven has cooled down, wipe off dirt and burned-on residue with a wet sponge, and then dry with a soft cloth.

Q. Can I open the oven door during the Pyrolytic Cleaning Cycle?

No. The door stays locked for the duration of the process. You will be able to open it again at the end of the cycle, when the oven temperature has dropped to a safe level.

Q. Where do the fumes from the fat burned during the Pyrolytic cycle go?

The fumes produced as a result of burning fat and grease during the Pyrolytic Cleaning Cycle are burned off by the grill heating element, and filtered by a ceramic catalytic converter at the top of the oven. When mixed with cooling air circulated by the fan, the fumes are expelled as cool water vapor out of the front of the oven (underneath the control panel)..

Q. Can I open the oven door during the Pyrolytic Cleaning Cycle?

No. The door stays locked for the duration of the process. You will be able to open it again at the end of the cycle, when the oven temperature has dropped to a safe level.

Q. My SMEG range has to be installed properly for it to work properly, right?

SMEG ranges must always be positioned completely-flat (use a level when adjusting the feet). A gap of at least two feet must also be left between the cooktop and the bottom of a hood or suspended wall unit, for instance, in order to guarantee completely-safe operation.

Q. Can I safely install a range between kitchen cabinetry without exposing the latter to high levels of heat?

SMEG ranges feature a special cooling system which keeps the front and sides of the range cool, meaning you can safely install them between kitchen cabinetry.

Q. What height does the range have to be if I want to install it between fitted kitchen cabinetry?

The top surface of the cooktop must be at the same height as the adjacent kitchentop.

Q. HEALTH (PFOA – PTFE – PFAS) - How is the SMEG cookware range made?

The SMEG Cookware range is made of cold-forged aluminium with a non-stick coating and steel handles. A stainless steel bottom is applied to the aluminium body, which makes them compatible with induction hobs. Lastly, the matching lids are made of tempered heat-resistant glass. All materials comply with the requirements of current food contact materials regulations.

Q. What should I do when using the non-stick cookware for the first time?

Before the first use, wash the cookware with soapy water, boil some water and then dry it. Grease the entire cooking surface with a tablespoon of edible oil or fat.

Q. How is the non-stick coating applied to the SMEG products?

The non-stick coatings are applied to the cookware in layers.
The first layer adheres to the metal surface of the pan. The second non-stick PTFE layer provides resistance to scratches and abrasion,
while the last layer gives the pots and pans the non-stick surface that makes it easier to clean them and to cook food by limiting the need for oils and fats.
